2011 Christmas cheer for the vulnerable - request from Malawi

Pastor Stanley from Step to Jesus Ministries in Malawi requests:

Christmas is approaching.  We intend as usual to cheer the aged, orphans, widows, the sick and the needy in general. We therefore humbly request you to assist us here with some funds so that we can buy some items and food to cheer these vulnerable people.

Last year, 25th December, 2010 “we had baptism ceremony and 39 believers were baptized, after the baptism we had a get together with orphans, widows, aged the poor and the needy, we shared food and African drink (thobwa), it was a wonderful time as we were singing to glorify God and shared His word.”

Verina's school report from Malawi

Please see the Malawi reports page to find the latest report from our star student, Verina, an orphan sponsored by Cherish Fund who is excelling in her studies in secondary school.  There are many more students looking for support and this is particularly important for girls.  If you would like to help an orphan in Malawi or Uganda, please Contact Us.

Vision to work with vulnerable women in UK

We have a vision to work with women who are struggling with poverty issues, suffering from domestic violence and especially those women who have been convicted of an offence and who are within the criminal justice system.  Weare currently investigating possibilities in this area as we have identified that this is a group which may be overlooked in general provision.  The Cherish Fund's present activity is focussed on Africa, so this would be a positive opportunity for us to re-commence support to projects for families in crisis in the UK too - one of the original areas of work for the Cherish Fund for many years (see the UK Projects page).

Women's stories from rural Malawi

Seven women in Chikwawa district, southern Malawi, responded to a questionnaire about their lives which was conductedby Malawi YMCA.  It allowed them to share their experiences and discuss the challenges and hopes which they have, with the aim that this can inform support for women and girls in that area.  They express of particular concern the lack of education for women and abusive/ irresponsible attitudes from their husbands or partners.

You can read their stories from the Malawi reports page.

The needs highlighted by these women emphasise the importance of giving girls the opporotunity to complete education.  This is why we have sponsored girls to complete their education in Malawi.  The latest student we are supporting is called Verina.  See the Malawi page for more details.

Fundraising concert on hold...

... We had hoped to hold one in 2009 or 2010 but it never came off the ground.  But, we still think it would be a great way to raise money and promote the Cherish Fund.  Would you like to organise one in your area, or like to have the opportunity to perform a piece (or two) as a solo/ duet/ small ensemble?  It could be classical, folk, world music etc.  If you're interested we'd love to hear from you!  More details on the Original Invitation flyer.

Malawi - donation of tools is stuck 450 miles away...

Tools with a Mission have kindly donated tools, sewing machines and computers to the Step to Jesus project in Malawi.  They received confirmation of the shipment in January 2009.  However, the tools are still stuck in a warehouse in Lusaka, Zambia and need transporting to Blantyre, Malawi before they can be use.  See the Malawi page for more details.

Malawi - Child sponsorship, Food provision, Flooding

Following the visit of one of our trustees to Malawi in October 2007 we have made a donation to the work of Step to Jesus Ministries, caring for orphans, widows and other needy people.  We were also able to see the YMCA Avoid AIDS band perform live - very talented! - and meet the young people who are keen to make a difference to their communities.
