School reports

Step to Jesus Ministries has many social programmes including winter cropping to provide food and to raise funds for school fees. They assist some children to attend secondary school through their own enterprises.

In addition, Cherish Fund has supported one secondary school pupil through school (Thoko) and is now supporting another girl called Verina.  Completing a school education is very important for girls in Malawi (see the Women's stories below).

You can read Verina's latest school report here.

Women's stories

Seven women in Chikwawa district, southern Malawi, responded to a questionnaire about their lives which was conducted by Malawi YMCA.  It allowed them to share their experiences and discuss the challenges and hopes which they have, with the aim that this can inform support for women and girls in that area.  They express of particular concern the lack of education for women and abusive/ irresponsible attitudes from their husbands or partners.

Below are some of the women who took part.  Click on the photos to read their stories.*

The needs highlighted by these women emphasise the importance of giving girls the opportunity to complete education.  This is why we have sponsored girls to complete their education in Malawi.  The latest student we are supporting is called Verina.  See the Malawi page for more details.

Food and fertilizer

The government has subsidised fertilizer to help some of the poorest people to be able to grow more food and therefore to be more self-supporting.  However, even at this subsidised price some people cannot afford it.

This is an annual request around October and November every year, when the rains start and people plant their crops.

Cost of one bag of fertilizer in 2010 = c£22

Dairy Cattle request

A repeated request from Step to Jesus Ministries to help the community become more self-supporting is for the purchase of dairy cattle to provide milk and manure.

Purchase and maintenance of two dairy cattle - initial cost of at least £1500.
